1993 Mumbai blasts: SC says Centre is bound to release gangster Abu Salem as per assurance given to Portugal on completion of 25 year sentence.
In April 2021, the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla told the Supreme Court that the government was bound by the assurance given by then deputy Prime Minister LK Advani to the Portugal government that any sentence handed out to Abu Salem will not exceed 25 years.
The court had reserved judgement in Salem’s case on May 5, 2022.
During the hearing, the court remnarked that when it was reading some other cases from the UK, it found that India has never violated the extradition assurance.
