Nagpur: Making a statement of authority, the State Election Commission (SEC) has issued directions to halt ongoing process relating to finalisation of new boundaries of Prabhags in Nagar Parishad/Nagar Panchayat with immediate effect. The SEC, Maharashtra, in a communication addressed to District Collectors, excluding Mumbai city and Mumbai suburbs, referred to earlier orders relating to ongoing proceedings to deal with objections/suggestions to draft publications of Prabhags.
Notably, Maharashtra Government during the ongoing budget session of State Legislature has amended rules governing administration of Local Self Government bodies wherein the Government has taken over the task of redrawing boundaries of Prabhags. As such Maharashtra Nagar Parishad, Nagar Panchayat va Audyogik Nagari Rules in Rule 3 it is now stated that with approval of SEC, State Government will decide formation of Prabhags.

The amendment was approved unanimously by both the Houses of State Legislature and Government notified the same. Already, SEC had started the process to conduct the elections to Nagar Parishad/Nagar Panchayat and also to Municipal Corporations and at most places finalized the draft of Prabhags. Right now the local administrations were busy finalising the objections/suggestions on the draft of Prabhag notified for the forthcoming elections. Now, the State Government is going to redraw the map of Prabhags and notify the draft for public hearing. It means the entire process of formation would be redone by the respective local self government bodies and this is going to result in delaying the elections.
