Nagpur: A security guard, attached to Gorewada project, lost his life in a fire that broke out in the check post due to a bonfire he lit up to protect himself from the cold weather on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ravindra Sadashiv Kalbande (41), a resident of Fetri.
According to police, Kalbande was a fabrication worker and also worked as night watchman for additional income. He came to Post No. 4 on Saturday night and lit a bonfire in the post. He closed the door from inside and went to the bed. The police suspect that his bed might have caught fire from sparks emanating from the bonfire and the fire slowly spread in the room. He became unconscious due to the thick smoke and later breathed his last. The incident came to the fore when his reliever arrived at the post. As Kalbande was not responding, he broke open the door only to find Kalbande lying dead on the bed.
Staff of Gittikhadan police rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. The police have registered a case of accidental death and are probing the matter further.
