Nagpur: In an unusual show-off, Shiv Sena legislators trumpeted the cause of Sanyukta Maharashtra (United Maharashtra) by erecting a symbolic martyrs’ memorial at the stairs of Vidhan Bhavan on the penultimate day of Winter Session. The Sena legislators carved out the names of 106 martyrs who had sacrificed their lives for United Maharashtra and paid their tributes at the symbolic memorial. The saffron party is dead opposed to separate Vidarbha State.
Leading the protest, Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik said that his party strongly condemned, inside and outside of both the Houses, the statement made by Advocate General Shrihari Aney in support of Vidarbha Statehood. “Aney is AG of United Maharashtra and he should have constrained himself from making such controversial statement. Aney does not know history of Maharashtra,” said Sarnaik.
Recently, the AG Shrihari Aney had said that a referendum carried out a few days ago had clearing pointed out that people of Vidarbha were in favour of a separate state. The statement of Aney triggered a vociferous protest by Shiv Sena legislators who stalled proceedings in both Assembly and Council and demanded immediate sacking of AG Aney. The AG, while making the statement, had said that 106 martyrs had not sacrificed their lives for Vidarbha but for keeping Mumbai with Maharashtra only.
