Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) commenced the tendering process for maintenance and repair work of broken parapet walls of Nag, Pili and Pohra rivers of Nagpur that were damaged due to the floods of September23 last year.
With just three months left for the monsoon, NMC has the herculean task of constructing over 8 km retaining walls on the banks of the rivers and nullahs across the city to prevent another flood like last year.
NMC has received a special Rs 204 crore grant, of which Rs 163.23 crore will be spent on constructing the damaged retaining walls to prevent floods from rivers and nullahs across the Corporation limits. NMC’s first priority would be to start construction of retaining walls from Ambazari overflow point to Dhiran Kanya School at Dhantoli on Wardha Road.
According to NMC’s Public Works Department survey, damaged walls at 36 different locations contributed to either floods or flood-like situations. Due to damaged retaining walls, especially from starting point of Nag River near Ambazari Lake, thousands of residents especially in localities like Corporation Colony, Daga Layout, Ambazari Layout, Purohit Layout, Kasturba Layout, Yashwant Nagar, Dandige Layout and Shankar Nagar suffered huge financial loss as flood water from Nag River entered these localities.
Besides, last year’s September 23 incessant rains had also damaged 61.38km of tar roads across the city. As per NMC’s survey, tar roads were damaged in 29 localities. Out of Rs 204.79 crore special funds, NMC will spend Rs 41.48 crore for building tar roads.
Flood-affected residents from localities situated downstream of Nag River near Ambazari were also demanding widening of Nag River by breaking the walls of Seven Wonders being developed by Maha Metro and shifting of Vivekananda Statue.
