Nagpur: The stalemate between the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Sitabuldi hawkers persists, with no immediate resolution in sight. For the second day, hawkers refrained from setting up their shops, instead staging a silent protest on the busy street. The NMC’s anti-encroachment department remains vigilant, ready to take action against unauthorized vendors.
The hawkers are protesting the NMC’s crackdown on unlicensed vendors, which was sparked by criticism from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The protesters held placards demanding the implementation of the Town Vending Committee’s decisions and questioning the politicians’ neglect of their issues. Some placards even appealed to the high court for intervention.
Abdul Razzaque Qureshi, leader of the hawkers’ union, announced a major protest at Samvidhan Square on Thursday, where they will meet the municipal commissioner to seek a solution. Qureshi emphasized that many unemployed individuals rely on street vending to support their families and deserve to live with dignity. He lamented that despite 35 years of struggle, the city’s politicians have failed to address their concerns.
