Nagpur: In a significant development for Nagpur’s urban infrastructure, the Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd (NSSCDCL) is set to inaugurate a multi-storey parking plaza in Sitabuldi on March 15, aiming to alleviate long standing parking issues in one of the city’s most congested commercial hubs.

The multi-storey parking plaza, constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore, is poised to become operational on March 15. Situated in the heart of Sitabuldi, the plaza boasts the capacity to accommodate at least 16 cars and 240 two-wheelers, providing a welcome relief to the perennial parking challenges faced by residents and visitors to this bustling area.

Sitabuldi has long grappled with encroachment problems, particularly from street vendors, resulting in chaotic situations. As a strategic response, the Smart City initiative proposed and implemented a solution by constructing a four-storey parking plaza on civic-owned land, costing Rs 5 crore. This initiative aims to not only address parking woes but also curb encroachment issues, creating a more organized and accessible urban environment.

In addition to the Sitabuldi project, the Smart City is concurrently developing a similar multi-storey parking plaza in Itwari’s Anaj Bazaar. With an estimated cost of Rs 5 crore, this upcoming facility is anticipated to accommodate at least 25 cars and 150 two-wheelers, further contributing to the city’s parking infrastructure.

While the Smart City initially proposed four smart parking plazas across the city, plans for two of them — Gokulpeth Market and the Gandhisagar area — were abandoned due to space constraints. Construction had begun on the Gokulpeth Market parking plaza, with an expenditure of Rs 20 lakh, but was halted midway as the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nagpur Improvement Trust were redeveloping the commercial complex in the area.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation has been actively identifying parking spots citywide. Currently, 11 on-street parking spaces out of the planned 75 have been initiated. Challenges, including objections from traffic police, have temporarily hindered progress at other locations. However, a joint survey by NMC and traffic police for 62 additional sites is underway, and it is anticipated that the remaining parking areas will be declared soon.

The inauguration of the Sitabuldi multi-storey parking plaza marks a significant step towards addressing Nagpur’s persistent parking challenges. The Smart City initiatives, coupled with ongoing efforts by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, underscore a commitment to creating a more efficient and organized urban landscape for residents and visitors alike.
