Nagpur: The Trauma Centre-Casualty Section and vice versa journey inside the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, will become easier as a ‘skywalk’ joining these two units, is almost ready. It is a part of the plan for which the Shinde-Fadnavis Government has sanctioned Rs 550 crore to GMCH.

This plan includes a huge gate at the end towards Rajabaksha Hanuman Temple. Just near the entrance, patients turn either towards the Trauma Care Centre or towards the Casualty Section. While going from Trauma Care Centre to Casualty Section or vice versa, one has to cross the road which the staff and senior citizens find difficult. To ease the traffic and people’s movement, a skywalk is being constructed between Trauma Care Centre and Casualty section for which a fund of Rs 4.93 crore has been marked.

Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) both will get a new look, new facilities, advanced equipment by next year. Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has taken initiative and sanctioned over Rs 800 crore to both these old tertiary care centres in Nagpur- – GMCH and IGGMCH. They both have prepared separate proposals for the utilisation of their funds.

IGGMCH, which is witnessing a lot of construction work, is ready with the proposal of Rs 302 crore. The proposal of GMCH includes the amount to be spent for the development of Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) which will get Rs8 crore for construction work and Rs 50 lakh for Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). As the gate towards Rajabaksha Temple is under construction, GMCH opened the old gate situated towards Medical College Square.

According to Medical Superintendent Dr Avinash Gawande, there were several problems at this gate as shop owners have encroached the part. Plus the premises near the gate were too messed up. Collector Dr Vipin Itankar helped us to remove the encroachment and we worked under the guidance of our Dean Dr Raj Gajbhiye and cleared premises. Now vehicular movement, pedestrian movement has become easier. Since the lesser use of this gate, the road approaching from it was neglected, he said.

GMCH had proposed a spacious hostel for 400 girls worth Rs 62.84 crore, whose work is underway. The girls hostel is planned in the wake of the rising number of girl students. GMCH has 20 rooms under the paying ward, which are not adequate to accommodate people. A lot of people getting admitted in GMCH demand paying wards. Considering that aspect, GMCH is mulling to increase those wards to 80 for which Rs 45.60 crore have been proposed.
