Nagpur Today: We learnt through our secret sources that the culinary delights being planned for the CKP festival beginning tomorrow were being test cooked to be tasted by some select foodies and epicureans for their verdict – and we could not help but gate crash!
The hush-hush trial was at the CKP Sabha Gruha where a few of the dishes had been prepared to get opinions on whether the taste would be to the liking of Nagpurians or changes were required.
We met the team of caterers from Thane who have specially travelled to Nagpur for this festival. They are not just very popular Caterers for Mumbaikars but are veterans in conducting CKP food festivals across the state – in Mumbai itself, Pune, Nasik and now Nagpur.
So dedicated are they to their craft and cooking that from the Railway station they and their team of cooks came directly to the CKP sabha gruha to set up the temporary kitchen. They did not know yet where they were going to be put up for the night.
Food test cooked consisted of ‘Bombil fry’ , stuffed Pomfret, Surmai fry, mutton masala, Wada – kombda, prawn curry, chicken biryani and in vegetarian cuisine the famous ‘Birde’ which is kadwe vaal chi usal, masala baingan, vaal khichdi, sol kadhi and bhakris.
The highlights were of course the two ‘desserts’ or sweet dishes – ukdiche modak and ninaav. If you have nothing else, a visit to the festival is a MUST for just these two items! They were that delicious and out of the world – trust us, you will not get to eat this stuff anywhere else in Nagpur, unless a CKP specialty restaurant is set up, and we do hope, after yesterday, that they do so fast.
