Spurt in mishaps: 718 vehicle owners penalised for traffic violations in 48 hrs on Samruddhi

Nagpur: Faced with the spurt in accidents, the Maharashtra Transport Department conducted a drive against traffic violators on the Samruddhi Mahamarg on April 17 and 18 at 11 entry and exit points. A total of 718 drivers were caught violating various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, including using worn-out tyres, missing reflective tapes, overspeeding, and lane cutting.

The analysis of the action taken revealed that the highest number of violations were in the form of driving vehicles with worn-out tyres. A total of 542 four-wheeler drivers were intercepted on Samruddhi Mahamarg for using worn-out tyres unfit for the Expressway, with Aurangabad topping the list with 143 cases, followed by Jalna (103) and Nagpur (100). The department prohibited entry of as many as 22 travellers on the Expressway.

The Transport Department, in association with Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), caught 78 drivers for crossing the speed limit of 120kmph in the last 48 hours with the help of the recently started exit management system introduced on the Expressway. The automated system detected these violations and did not allow the drivers to cross the boom barrier at the exit point despite payment of toll tax.

The highest number of speeding cases was detected at Shrirampur, where 33 drivers were found to have reached the exit point before time, indicating a violation of the permissible maximum driving speed of 120kmph. It was followed by 27 in Nagpur and 15 at Aurangabad.

Apart from this, interceptor vehicles of RTOs of Amravati, Aurangabad and Washim also caught 59 vehicles on the expressway for various violations like overspeeding, lane cutting etc. The intensified drive was launched to curb accidents on the 540-km stretch of Samruddhi Expressway between Nagpur and Shirdi. The drivers were also counselled on road safety apart from penalizing them.
