Nagpur: The Maharashtra Government has recently moved the Supreme Court to contest the premature release order of underworld don Arun Gawli, who is serving a life sentence in Nagpur Central Jail. The move comes after the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court ordered his release on April 5.
Gawli’s lawyer Nagman Ali said the government filed a petition before Nagpur Bench on May 9, seeking deferment of its order to allow an additional four-month custody of the don. The government informed the bench of Justice Vinay Joshi and Justice Vrushali Joshi, about its appeal to the apex court.
Ali said that the High Court declined the State plea, indicating it would give the government one last opportunity by extending its order by a month.
Earlier, the same bench had granted Gawli’s plea, directing the government to decide on his release within four weeks from the date of order. Gawli was convicted to life imprisonment by a Mumbai Sessions Court on August 3, 2012, along with 11 others for the murder of a former Sena Corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.
