Adding to the list of 59 important things kept out of Local Body Tax (LBT), the State Government has exempted lottery business from LBT. Surprisingly the vital needs medicines are still under the LBT gambit. This has raised questions among the masses about decision-makers in the administration.
The LBT has been relaxed to 59 necessary things which are part of the day-to-day use of common people. However, the inclusion of lottery business in the relaxation came as a surprise to the people. The prices of medicines are making a hole in common people’s pocket and people are finding it impossible to cope with the rising medicine prices. A question is pointed at the State Government that on what grounds it included lottery in most necessary commodities for people.
It is to be mentioned that with ever rising medicine prices, poor people could afford only the 25 percent of the prescribed medicines and yet Government relaxation in LBT was given to money-makers and the most essential commodity was neglected plainly by the administration.
State Government declared the list of commodities which were given relaxation in LBT on September 10. It was surprising to learn that lottery was placed in this list. It is interesting to note that lottery business in Nagpur register the turnover of crores of rupees and thus Government gets a handsome amount as tax.
If statistics are to be believed then Nagpur Municipal Corporation may suffer a loss of Rs 24 crore to Rs 30 crore if LBT was imposed in lottery business. Thus, administration conveniently, added lottery business in the relaxation list of LBT, largely neglecting the need to include medicines in this list. The motive of administration to earn more money at the cost of common people’s health is clear from this decision.
