Nagpur: The site of the Nagpur Nagrik Sahakari Hospital, located at Alankar Square on North Ambazari Road in Nagpur, has remained abandoned for many years. In an effort to revitalise the location and provide essential medical facilities to citizens, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) proposed the establishment of a multi-specialty hospital, following an order from the Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court.
However, the State Government has deemed it unfeasible to construct the hospital using government funds and advised NIT to transfer the land to an organisation for development. In connection with this matter, the Joint Secretary of the Urban Development Department has submitted an affidavit to the High Court, with the next hearing scheduled for November 20.

Dr Bhalchandra Subhedar, a founder member of the Nagpur Nagrik Sahkari Hospital, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the High Court for the demand of establishment of a multispecialty hospital focused on organ transplantation at the long-closed site. Instead, NIT’s proposal to the State Government suggested a general multispecialty hospital. During a previous hearing, the High Court mandated the State Government to respond to the proposal.
The State Health Department indicated that providing primary healthcare is its responsibility and asserted that multi-specialty hospitals fall outside its purview. The Department of Medical Education clarified that its role is limited to managing government hospitals and determining policy regarding medical curriculum, thus making the creation of a multispecialty hospital beyond its scope.
In light of the refusals from both major departments, the Urban Development Department has advised NIT to consider auctioning the site to an organisation or a person. The petitioner plans to submit an affidavit regarding the State Government’s involvement in the matter.
