Student ‘kidnapped’ in Nagpur, family receives ransom call

Nagpur: A 22-year-old student, Shubham Ishwardas Tirpude, has mysteriously gone missing after attending a hearing in a copy case at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU).

Shubham, a student of Masters of Social Work (MSW), was caught copying during an examination. After the hearing, Shubham, a resident of Manegaon, Amgaon, District- Gondia, contacted his brother on February 22, stating he was on his way back. However, he failed to reach home. His brother then filed a missing complaint on February 23.

Shockingly, the family received a message through social media demanding Rs 50,000 ransom. “The person contacted his brother on Instagram on Sunday morning and told them that Shubham had been kidnapped,” said a police official.

Panicked, Shubham’s brother paid Rs 8,500 to a mobile number online as part of the ransom. However, Shubham has not yet come home. Ambazari Police have initiated a search for the missing student and are also investigating the Instagram ID through which the ransom was demanded.
