Nagpur: Sairaj Nayse and Ridheema Sarpate of Nagpur won doubles titles in their respective categories in the Yonex Sunrise Maharashtra Sub Junior (U-15/U-17) State Badminton Selection Tournament that concluded in Nashik on Monday.
In the U-15 boys doubles final, Sairaj and his BAMU partner Satya Chauhan upset second seeds Pune’s Sayaji Shelar and Udayan Deshmukh of Aurangabad in straight games 21-18, 21-16. With the win, the pair avenged their three-game narrow semi-final defeat in the last tournament in Ahmednagar.
Second seeded combination of Ridheema and Prakriti Sharma (BOR) got the better of Nagpur’s Nishika Gokhe and her Pune partner Yutika Chavan in three tough games prevailing 21-18, 16-21, 21- 19 in the U-17 girls doubles title clash. Nishika had to remain content with the second spot.
Rutva Sajwan started his U-17 boys singles final against top seed Arjun Reddy Aluguvelli of BAMU in style. He stunned the better rated player to take the first game 21-7 with consummate ease. Both the players fought tooth and nail in the second game but Arjun won crucial points to make it 23-21 taking the match into the decider. He kept the tempo to win the third game and the crown 21- 13.
Shourya Madavi was another player who finished on the podium. She and Rutva, making it an all Nagpur pair. The second seeds lost the U-17 mixed doubles title match to Parth Deore (NSK) and Tanvi Gharpure (TH) 21- 19, 21-7. Sairaj, who trains under Kunal Dasarwar and TS Bisht, is a student of Narayana Vidyalayam, Chinchbhavan, Nagpur. Shourya plays under Jayendra Dhole at Subhedar Hall.
