Task fraud: Software engineer loses Rs 42 lakh in Nagpur

Nagpur: A software engineer was duped of Rs 42 lakh in a task fraud by cyber fraudsters. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at Cyber Police Station in this regard.

The incident, which occurred on June 20, came to light on August 29, when the victim, Prafull Rangrao Gondekar (30), a resident of Plot No 45, Aate Lay Out, Khadgaon Road, Wadi, reported the incident to the police.

According to the complaint, Prafull received a link for an online part-time job on his WhatsApp account. He applied for the same by clicking the link, and got added to a WhatsApp group named “LY online trading D101”, which already had 35 members. In the group, he came across a message suggesting that members had made significant profits by investing money. Believing the message, Prafull expressed his readiness to invest. The accused then sent him a link and encouraged him to register on a website, promising substantial profits.

However, after he got registered, instead of getting any returns, a huge sum of Rs 42.55 lakh got withdrawn from his bank account. The Cyber Police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 419, 420 of the Indian Penal Code, and also under Sub-section 66 (C) and 66 (D) of the Information Technology Act.

Efforts are underway to locate and apprehend the accused.
