Nagpur: In a remarkable display of bravery, two police constables and a local youth rescued a teenage girl who allegedly attempted to end her life by jumping into Futala Lake in Nagpur on Friday afternoon.

The incident occurred during a routine patrol by constables — PC Rajendra Somkuwar and NPC Vinod Sanap — around 1.15 pm on Friday. They spotted the girl standing precariously on the edge of the lake wall. Moments later, she jumped into the water. Reacting swiftly, the constables requested help from Kunal Rakesh Choudhary, a 20-year-old local swimmer from Hazaripahad, who happened to be nearby.

Without hesitation, Kunal dived into the lake to assist in the rescue. The 18-year-old girl, a resident of New Narsala, was safely pulled out and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The police later contacted the girl’s father, who revealed that his daughter had attempted suicide due to a domestic issue.

According to reports, the college student, disappointed with her parents’ constant scolding, had left home after a tiff with family members. She had apparently told her family that she was heading to her tuition class but took a city bus to reach Futala lakeside.

Constable Vinod Sanap and Rajendra Somkuwar said, “We were towards the Vayusena Nagar side when the youngster Kunal Choudhary pointed at the lake, showing us the place where the girl had just jumped. He wanted to jump into the water to try and rescue the girl. We accompanied him to the water’s edge nearby and allowed him to enter the water,” said Sanap, adding Choudhary was the real hero of the rescue act.

“We were cautious about Choudhary too and kept on guiding him. When he managed to grab the girl by the hair, we helped him pull her out of the lake to safety,” said Sanap, adding her father was informed when she calmed down a bit and gave them his number.

After receiving counselling from Senior PI Vinayal Golhe at the Ambazari Police Station, the girl was safely escorted home by police staff. Senior PI Golhe praised the quick actions of Kunal and the two constables, recognising their efforts with a commendation for their life-saving bravery.
