Nagpur: GOLD ornaments weighing 40 tola were stolen from the bunglow of Sandip Gawai, corporator and Chairman of Water Supply Committee of Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Gittikhadan police said. According to police, the thieves took away the jewellery along with a vault weighing 90 kg.
Gawai owns a spacious bungalow at Malabar Colony in Seminary Hills area. Swimming pool construction work was on in the bungalow premises for the last few days. Gawai family owns a clothing business. On October 17, Gawai went to Mumbai with his family for shopping. Workers, servants, a driver and a woman relative were at home as work on the swimming pool was underway. Gawai returned to Nagpur on Saturday. On Sunday morning, he opened the wooden cupboard. He was stunned to see the vault missing.
He questioned the people present in the house but no one knew anything. He informed the police about the theft. Staff of Gittikhadan Police Station and DCP Zone II Vinita S rushed to the spot and performed panchanama. The police have retrieved CCTV footage for investigation. Suspicious movement of anyone was not detected by the police in the footage of cameras installed on the front side of the house so far.
“We need more time to scan the entire CCTV footage,” said Gittikhadan PI G K Kalyankar. Offence was not registered till filing of this report. The vault was installed inside the cupboard in a room. Ornaments of the family were kept in this vault.
The thief had complete knowledge of the house. Cash and other valuables also were in the cupboard, but the thief did not touch anything else, the police added.
