Third Eye: CCTV camera network helping Nagpur police crack crimes with evidence

Nagpur: The CCTV cameras installed on every street in the Second Capital of Maharashtra are turning out to be enormously helpful for Nagpur Police. These state-of-the-art cameras are truly a Third Eye for the police and it is reported that nearly six hundred crimes have been solved in the city in the last two years. Interestingly, in more than eight hundred cases, the police have also used the CCTV footage as evidence, a Sakal report said.

Around 3500 cameras have been installed in Nagpur to monitor and control traffic. Through it, the movement of the entire city is monitored by the office of Commissioner of Police, Traffic Department, Crime Branch, Control Room and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).

With CCTV camera networks, it is easy to keep an eye on the happenings in every square of the city. That is why this Third Eye of the police has been very useful in solving crimes in the last few years.

An eight-month-old baby was abducted on Thursday midnight in the Kalamna area in Nagpur. However, the police traced and rescued the toddler within five hours of the crime based on the footage of the CCTV cameras at the railway station and other areas.

Apart from this, four months ago, while investigating the murder at Shankarnagar petrol pump, the accused were traced and arrested through CCTV footage. Therefore, CCTV played a major role in the police investigation, the report said.

Currently there are 3,600 CCTV cameras installed at various places in Nagpur city. Nagpur Municipal Corporation, NIT, Public Works Department together have 4,000 km of roads in the city. All these roads are being monitored through CCTV cameras.

According to the report, last year the help of CCTV cameras was taken in 1543 crimes. CCTV data was helpful in 832 cases. Police were able to solve 315 of them. The footage was also used as evidence in 517 cases. This year till the month of October, the police have taken the help of CCTV footage in 1343 crimes and in almost 700 cases, CCTV camera data has helped. The report said that nearly 300 cases have been solved and evidence has been used in nearly 400 cases.
