Tiger, tigress killed in territorial fight in TATR

Nagpur: Two carcasses of a tiger and tigress were found in the core zone of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) on Monday. The tigers, including a male and female, might have died in a territorial fight, informed a senior forest officer of TATR.

According to the reports, in the forest department, a forest guard who was patrolling the area noticed the two carcasses of tigers near Khantole at compartment number 338 in the Zero area of Kolsa range, under the core zone of TATR. After getting information, the senior officials visited the spot for inspection. During the course of preliminary investigation, it was noticed that the tigers might have died in a territorial fight in the forest area.

The male tiger, T-142 was 6-7 years old and tigress T-92 was a sub-adult. The tigers might have died in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. More information is being collected through camera traps set-up earlier near the incident spot, reports said.

The tigress’ body was eaten partially when the carcasses were recovered. The carcasses have been sent to the Transit Treatment Centre (TTC), Chandrapur, for autopsy and the same will be conducted on Tuesday. The actual cause of death will be ascertained only after the post-mortem and lab testing, informed the senior forest officer of TATR.
