Nagpur/Chandrapur: A one-and-a-half-year-old tigress was found dead in a farm near Dongargaon village in Mul taluka of Chandrapur district on Wednesday morning, causing a stir among local residents. Preliminary reports indicate that the big cat may have died due to pneumonia.
Dongargaon, located about 10 kms from Mul taluka headquarter, falls within the Saoli forest range, known for its significant tiger population. The carcass was discovered by a farmer who had gone to his field in the morning. The incident was immediately reported to the forest department, which dispatched a team to the spot.
Officials conducted a panchnama on-site and identified the tiger as a young female. The carcass was later sent to Chandrapur’s Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) for a post-mortem examination. The autopsy was conducted by veterinarians Dr Kundan Podchalwar and Dr Sandeep Chonkar, following which the body was incinerated.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Prashant Khade, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Vikas Tarse, Saoli Range Forest Officer Vinod Dhurve, Chief Wildlife Warden representative Umesh Jhire, and Mukesh Bhandakkar representative of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) were present during the post-mortem.
Preliminary investigations suggest the tiger succumbed to pneumonia. All organs were found intact, and samples have been sent for DNA testing at the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) to confirm the exact cause of death.
