Nagpur: It’s time to show the inked finger with a smile!! The first phase of the Lok Sabha 2024 election kicked off on Friday, April 19, in Nagpur constituency, along with polling in four other constituencies including Ramtek, Chandrapur, Bhandara-Gondia, and Gadchiroli-Chimur. A significant turnout is expected as citizens exercise their democratic right to choose their representatives.
Voting began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm. The time will be extended to 6 pm to enable those already in the queues to exercise their franchise.
In Nagpur, all eyes are on the battle between BJP’s Nitin Gadkari and Congress’ Vikas Thakre, promising a close contest. Similarly, Ramtek sees a competitive face-off between Shiv Sena’s Raju Parwe (Shinde faction) and Shyamrao Barve of Congress.
Voter statistics:
• Nagpur: Total 22,18,259 voters
• Male: 11,10,840
• Female: 11,07,197
• Transgender: 276 (a 2.5 time increase compared to 2019)
• Ramtek: Total 20,45,717 voters
• Male: 10,43,266
• Female: 10,02,396
Polling stations:
• Nagpur: 2,105 polling stations
• Ramtek: 2,405 polling stations
• Total: 4,510 polling stations
• 12 booths are entirely managed by women, including female Presiding Officers (POs).
• Special arrangements for Persons with Disabilities (PwD) are in place, with PwD polling officers.
Adequate security measures are in place. There are no vulnerable polling stations in the district. However, to enhance security measures, certain polling stations have been identified as sensitive and critical, where Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed.
As voters exercise their franchise, the atmosphere remains peaceful and orderly. The Election Commission’s efforts to ensure a fair and secure electoral process are commendable, reflecting the essence of democracy in action.
