Nagpur: In a bid to alleviate the perennial headache of parking congestion in Nagpur, the Traffic Control Branch has announced the designation of 21 off-street parking spots across 10 zones in consultation with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). This initiative aims to provide convenience to the citizens of the second capital of the State, addressing the longstanding issue of haphazard parking that often leads to traffic snarls and disputes.
The decision follows a joint survey conducted by police and civic body officials, identifying 75 roads suitable for earmarking parking areas for both four and two-wheelers. However, the initial list released by the Traffic Control Branch seems to have overlooked some major commercial hubs of the city, such as Sitabuldi, Gandhibagh, Itwari, Gokulpeth, Khamla, and Lakadganj, with only a small stretch on Central Avenue being mentioned.
These areas, known for their dense population and bustling markets, have long suffered from a dearth of designated parking spaces, forcing vehicles to be parked haphazardly, often leading to disputes between shopkeepers and citizens, and even conflicts during towing and lifting operations.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Control Branch, Shashikant Satav, has emphasized the significance of the newly designated parking spots, stating that they aim to bring peace of mind to citizens who have long grappled with the chaos of unregulated parking. The spots are currently designated on a pilot basis and will remain enforced until June 5.
In addition to notifying the parking spots, the Traffic Police have urged the NMC’s Enforcement Department to take necessary action to remove encroachments from the notified streets. Moreover, plans are underway to paint white lines to demarcate parking areas and install proper signboards for citizens’ convenience.
Ravi Bundhade, Executive Engineer, Traffic, NMC, clarified that the off-street parking will be available free of cost for the time being. However, he noted that the question of introducing fees for using parking slots is subject to policy decisions, emphasizing that there is currently no proposal on the table regarding this matter.
Citizens are encouraged to provide feedback and lodge complaints regarding the new parking initiative by contacting the DCP, Traffic, Nagpur City Police. The launch of these off-street parking spots marks a significant step forward in addressing Nagpur’s longstanding parking woes, providing hope for smoother traffic flow and enhanced urban convenience in the days ahead.
