Nagpur: Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Singal assured the members and office-bearers of Sarafa Association that the police were committed to addressing their concerns and ensuring safety of bullion traders in Nagpur.
After listening to the issues raised by the bullion traders at a joint meeting on Wednesday, Dr Singal assured that the police would take all necessary precautions to prevent any harassment to them. The Nagpur Police Chief said that the vigilance committee would be strengthened to more effectively resolve the problems faced by the traders. He also assured that investigating officers at the police station level would conduct inquiries into stolen property in the presence of a ‘panch’ after the accused was arrested.
To maintain transparency, officers would be instructed to provide traders with the First Information Report (FIR) or related details and a photocopy of any recovered property, he added. Furthermore, he said, the statements of traders would now be recorded at their shops with clear instructions given at the police station level. Dr Singal urged the Sarafa traders to verify the identity of customers by obtaining a photocopy of their official ID and maintaining an accurate register.
In light of security concerns, the Commissioner of Police strongly recommended installation of CCTV systems in the Sarafa market. To foster a positive relationship between the Sarafa traders and the police, the Commissioner Police directed all Police Inspectors to hold meetings directly with the public, rather than at the police station, to ensure open and transparent communication. Dr Singal also reassured the traders that any unnecessary harassment by police officers should be reported directly to his office. He promised strict action against any officer found at fault.
The City Police chief further suggested that all traders should employ watchmen and take additional measures for their own security. The meeting was also attended by Joint Commissioner of Police Ashwati Dorje, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sanjay Patil and Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kotwali /Lakadganj Divisions), Anita More who reiterated the police department’s commitment to the safety and well-being of the Sarafa traders.
