Nagpur: In a bid to tackle the issue of haphazard parking on major thoroughfares in Nagpur, DCP (Traffic) Chetna Tidke has implemented a strict measure of suspending driving licenses and permits of errant vehicles. The initiative, which began on May 19, has already seen significant results in curbing the problem of reckless parking. Traffic police officers from 10 different zones have actively participated in the campaign, targeting private buses and auto-rickshaws that contribute to the congestion on the city’s roads.
During the enforcement drive, a total of 182 auto-rickshaws, 29 buses, and 54 heavy vehicles were penalized for their involvement in haphazard parking. The fines imposed on these violators have amounted to approximately Rs 2.22 lakh. The revenue collected from these penalties will contribute to the improvement of traffic management and infrastructure within the city.
Furthermore, the traffic police officers from the 10 zones have also taken the initiative to submit proposals to the Transport Department. These proposals aim to address the issue of repeat traffic offenders and suggest appropriate action to be taken against them. Senior Police Inspector Vinod Choudhary reported that the Sitabuldi traffic police have already forwarded proposals to the Nagpur City Regional Transport Office, recommending the suspension of driving licenses and permits for 19 buses and 15 auto-rickshaws.
Senior PI Choudhary highlighted the traffic congestion experienced on the Tekdi Road patch near Manas Square, particularly during peak hours. Despite the construction of a new road underbridge, congestion persists due to the chaotic halts made by private buses to pick up passengers from the bustling square. Illegal parking of buses along this busy road significantly disrupts the flow of traffic, with both private and MSRTC buses being repeat offenders. As a result, the Sitabuldi zone initiated surprise inspections at this square. Within two days, they detained two buses and forwarded proposals to the transport department for the suspension of licenses for 19 drivers and permits for private buses that violated traffic regulations.
Similarly, auto-rickshaws contribute to traffic nightmares at busy areas such as Variety Square, Munje Square, and Rani Jhansi Square. Not only do the drivers frequently disregard traffic signals, but they also park their three-wheelers in the middle of the road to pick up passengers. In response, the Sitabuldi zone has detained over 20 auto-rickshaws belonging to errant drivers.
The traffic crackdown on haphazard parking is an essential step towards ensuring smoother traffic flow and improved road safety in Nagpur. With the suspension of driving licenses and permits, coupled with strict penalties, it is expected that motorists will become more aware of the consequences of their actions. The collaborative efforts between the traffic police and the Transport Department reflect a commitment to creating a safer and more efficient transportation system for the residents of Nagpur.
