Nagpur: In a twist that has left many within the Nagpur City Police force intrigued, policemen from the Traffic Control Branch, who are typically responsible for managing traffic flow, recently conducted a raid on a gambling den. This unorthodox operation has triggered intense speculation and discussions among the rank and file of the police department.
The targeted establishment, allegedly operated by Shailesh Gedam, had long been on the radar of senior police officials due to its suspected involvement in illegal gambling activities. Despite previous enforcement actions and warnings, Gedam’s gambling den reportedly continued to thrive, drawing attention in recent weeks. This persistent situation led Commissioner of Police (CP) Amitesh Kumar to take personal intervention and initiate a more assertive approach.

In a surprising departure from convention, CP Amitesh Kumar directed the raid to be carried out by officers from the Sadar Traffic Zone on a Monday night. As the police descended upon the location, the gamblers present at the scene attempted to flee upon spotting the cops. However, the determined police personnel managed to apprehend three individuals in connection with the illicit activities. Moreover, the operation resulted in the confiscation of seven to eight two-wheelers from the premises.
It is noteworthy that such crackdowns on illegal establishments are traditionally executed by specialized units such as the Crime Branch or the local police station’s DB (Detection Branch) Squad. The decision to involve the traffic police in this unconventional raid has raised eyebrows and sparked conversations within the force.
