Tragic double fatality on Sadar Flyover exposes safety concerns in Nagpur

Nagpur: In yet another distressing incident highlighting the critical need for improved urban planning and traffic safety measures, a horrific accident claimed two lives on Monday evening on the Sadar Flyover in Nagpur. The victims, identified as Pawan Ishwar Zade (40) and Anuttar Ganpat Shambharkar (42), met their untimely demise in a collision involving a speeding car.

The tragedy unfolded around 5:30 pm when Zade and Shambharkar were on a Splendor motorcycle, navigating the Sadar flyover. Suddenly, a Maruti Ertiga car, allegedly driven by Amol Arvind Gadwe (38) at a high velocity, attempted to overtake another vehicle, resulting in a catastrophic collision with the bike. The force of the impact catapulted Zade off the flyover, causing him to fall approximately 70-80 feet onto the road below, resulting in instantaneous fatality. Shambharkar, critically injured in the collision, succumbed to his injuries later in the day.

Traffic on the flyover ground to a halt in the aftermath of the tragic incident. Prompt response from Traffic Police stationed near Kasturchand Park Metro Station, along with Sadar Police personnel, ensured the victims were swiftly transported to Mayo Hospital. Unfortunately, Shambharkar was declared dead by attending physicians.

Gadwe, the driver of the Maruti Ertiga, was taken into custody by Sadar Police on charges of dangerous driving and causing death due to negligence. Authorities have also initiated blood tests to determine if Gadwe was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or any other intoxicating substance.

This grim occurrence once again raises serious concerns about the safety measures in place on city flyovers. The incident follows a string of similar accidents, including a hit-and-run incident in May of this year, where a mother and her son lost their lives on the Sadar flyover. Last September, a family of four, including two children, suffered fatal injuries when struck by a speeding SUV traveling in the wrong direction on the Sakkardara flyover. These tragic events underscore the pressing need for enhanced safety measures and vigilant traffic enforcement on Nagpur’s urban thoroughfares.
