On the occasion of International Forest Day “A project of training village women for making eco friendly bags” was launched by Maharashtra Forest department. This project is assigned to the Post Graduate Department of Master of Fashion Design, L.A.D. & Smt. R.P. College for Women, Nagpur.
The bags will be made from biodegradable material like tinted paper, chart paper, drawing sheet, marble paper, news paper and organic fabrics like jute, linen, cotton, hessian etc. Every bag will carry messages of slogan to conserve and preserve nature, Slogans on Save Environment will encourages others to do something to save environment, and will motivate the masses to discard plastic bags. The staff and students of the college will be trainers who will train the village women at the centers set up by the forest department who will also provide with the material required to make the bags.
The embellishments used for the bags include blocks, tie & die, fabrics and screen printing with regional and traditional embroideries. The students’ innovative idea will be used in a unique way to make it more attractive. 20 women will be trained in one batch to produce quality products.
Harsha Jharia, Vice Principal & HOD of the dept. of Fashion Design will be the over all In-charge of the project where as the prototype of making bags will be guided by Dr. Varsha Mankar & Vibha Gotmare with artist Aparna Rajvaidya – faculty of the department. The project is supported by WES Management & Director Dr. Panna Akhani & Principal Dr. Shyamala Nair .
A part of responsibility of marketing and promotion of the bags will be taken up by the alumni students of the department who are already placed as visual merchandisers in different shopping malls of Nagpur.
The pilot work of the project is already done on International Forest Day by designing a “Kit” form of eco-friendly bags with the slogans. The wide perspective of the future of this project is to make not only forest but our own Nagpur city polythene free.
