Travel bus driver, conductor arrested for smuggling liquor to ‘Dry’ Chandrapur

Driver and conductor of a travel bus on Tuesday morning were arrested right in front of Imamwada Police Station on the charges of smuggling a stock of country and foreign liquor to ‘Dry’ Chandrapur District. Cops have seized the liquor stock as well as the bus collectively valued at Rs 8.23 lakh.

The dramatic incident took place when the Imamwada police received a tip-off that a stock of liquor is being transported in the travel bus of Sai Travels and the destination was ‘Dry’ Chandrapur District. Armed with the tip-off, a team of Imamwada police led by PSI Mohekar, decided to act in front of Police Station itself as the travel bus was to pass the spot en route to Chandrapur. Soon the team of cops spotted the Sai Travels bus (MH-40/Y 6858) approaching the spot and stopped it. The cops immediately barged into the bus for frisking and found three bags containing foreign made Indian liquor and a white sack full of country liquor stacked at the cabin of bus driver. Upon discovery of the heady stuff, the driver of the travel bus Ganesh Shankar Shende (49) of Chandan Nagar and the conductor Umesh Budele (27) of Ganeshpeth Model Mill Chawl were arrested. The liquor stock as well as the bus collectively valued at Rs 8.23 lakh was seized by the cops.

The seizure of liquor stock in the travel bus has put the city cops in alert mode. Dozens of buses from city go to Chandrapur that has been declared ‘Dry’ District. Smuggling of liquor to the place is a lucrative proposition as the liquor is sold there at exhorbitant price. Cops are questioning the arrested driver-conductor duo who the real owner of the smuggled liquor stock and names of other players as well.
