Two men killed in tiger attacks in Chandrapur district

As many as 49 deaths have been registered in man-animal conflicts in Chandrapur district this year from January 1 to December 14, 2022

Nagpur/Chandrapur: Fresh cases of man-animal conflict were reported in Chandrapur district on Wednesday in which two persons were killed in tiger attacks in two different forest ranges. One of the incidents took place in Saoli tehsil and the other in Mul tehsil.

It may be noted that as many as 49 man-animal conflicts have been registered in Chandrapur district from January 1 to December 14, 2022, informed Prakash Lonkar, Chief Conservator of Forest, Chandrapur Circle. In all, 38 persons under Chandrapur Territorial Area while 11 under Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (TATR) and Forest Development Corporation Maharashtra (FDCM) have died in tiger/leopard attacks this year. In all, 43 persons were killed in tiger attacks while 6 persons were killed in leopard attacks, he further informed.

On Wednesday morning, a 65- year-old farmer was killed in a tiger attack in Saoli tehsil when he was returning home from his farm. The deceased, identified as Baburao Kamble, was a resident of Rudrapur. A tiger pounced upon Kamble when he was walking back home. The tiger tried to pull him by the neck into the forest. When villagers noticed this they raised an alarm.

The matter was reported to the Forest Department. Forest team reached the spot and launched a search for the body. They later found Kamble’s body without the neck. The post-mortem was conducted and Rs 25,000 was handed over to Kamble’s family as initial compensation, informed Prakash Lonkar, Chief Conservator of Forest, Chandrapur Circle.

In yet another incident, a shepherd from Kantapeth village in Mul tehsil, some 32 kms away from district headquarters, was also killed in a tiger attack on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Devrao Sopankar (55), had taken his goats for grazing in the forest near the village. When he failed to return home in the evening Sopankar’s family members and relatives launched a search for him at the spot where he would take the goats regularly. But they were shocked to find Sopankar’s blood stained body at the spot. The incident took place under Chichpalli Forest Range in Mul tehsil, informed CCF Lonkar.
