Nagpur: Two of the three men who suffered serious burns when the fire of a cremation pyre flared up at Rani Talao Mokshadham in New Kamptee area Thursday afternoon succumbed while undergoing treatment at Mayo Hospital on Friday morning.
With serious injuries, Dilip Gajbhiye (60), Sudhir Dongre (45) and Sudhakar Khobragade (50), all residents of Khalasi Line, Nagsen Nagar, were rushed to Mayo Hospital. However, Dilip Gajbhiye and Sudhir Dongre succumbed during the course of treatment.
The incident took place during the cremation of Siddharth Antuji Humne, a resident of Modipadav, Nagsen Nagar, who died in an accident. One of the relatives of the deceased poured diesel from a plastic can for lighting the pyre. After sometime, he again poured diesel into the already lit pyre to expedite the burning process due to which the fire flared up and the fuel can exploded.
Gajbhiye, Dongre and Khobragade, who were standing near the pyre, sustained severe burn injuries. Some residents of Nagsen Nagar attending Humne’s last rites panicked and allegedly ran away while others present nearby tried to rescue the victims. Injured Gajbhiye and Dongre were rushed to Mayo Hospital. Khobragade was taken to a private hospital from where the doctors also referred him to Mayo Hospital.
Senior Inspector SantoshVairagade, In-Charge of New Kamptee Police Station, said that the victims — Gajbhiye and Dongre — are the relatives of the deceased whose last rites were being performed. On being informed, a police team visited the crematorium to ascertain the facts from eye-witnesses, he added.
