Nagpur: Two constables from the Kalamna Police Station have been suspended by Commissioner of Police, Dr Ravinder Singal, following accusations of robbery.
The accused cops Pankaj Yadav and Sandip Yadav are currently on the run after allegedly robbing a student of a gold chain valued at Rs 2.10 lakh after threatening to book him and his girlfriend for obscene acts. The incident took place on April 13 around 9 pm.
The incident came to light when the youth approached the police and lodged a complaint. Earlier, the case had been registered against fake cops. However, after the probe, it came to light that two constables attached to Kalamna Police Station are the culprits.
According to the police, the complainant is an engineering student at Symbiosis College in East Nagpur. The youth and his girlfriend were spotted by the constables when they were speaking at an isolated place opposite a hotel on Outer Ring Road on April 13 around 9 pm. The accused cops Pankaj and Sandip arrived at the spot on a two-wheeler and confronted the couple. They first introduced themselves as the beat marshals of Kalamna Police and inquired about the names of the boy and girl. For a few minutes, the policemen confronted the couple and threatened to take legal action against them for engaging in obscene activities at an isolated place.
The couple was scared of police action, and the girl started crying in front of the police. Meanwhile, one of the constables also beat up the youth. After a few minutes of drama, the constables demanded Rs 1 lakh from the youth to refrain from initiating action against them. As the youth did not have that much cash with him, the cops asked him to hand over the gold chain he was wearing. The youth handed over the gold chain weighing 30 grams worth over Rs 2.10 lakh. After taking the chain, the constables vanished from the spot.
The youth returned to his hostel and was in a state of shock for a few days. He narrated the incident to his friends and parents, who advised him to lodge a complaint with the police. The student lodged a complaint with Wathoda Police Station. Senior police officers were stunned after receiving the complaint and directed a probe into the matter. After thorough analysis of CCTV footage, the police identified the constables involved in the incident.
A case under Sections 392, 170, and 134 of the Indian Penal Code was registered by Wathoda Police against the constables.
