Nagpur Today.
It could happen in apna Nagpur only! When a fellow who does not really need to do it, but still goes to great lengths, takes a lot of trouble and spends a lot of lucre, to arrange a unique food festival for his friends and family in the city… and believe me, in Nagpur the dividing line between the two is very thin.
So when Gagan Sial, known to his friends as Binnu Bhaiya – or BB – decided to hold a Japanese food festival called Umamiya ( literally the tasty place) all his friends like the Bapunas, the Kales, the Singhanias, the Upadhyays, the Sanchetis, the Muttemwars and many more of Nagpur’s elite came flocking.
A celebrity chef, Gurvinder, who has lived in Japan for a long time and has a Japanese family, did the cooking. Which was all done on live counters. Most of the ingredients, like the Salmon, mushrooms and sea weeds had been purchased from Japan by Gurvinder for the event which was held at Nagpur’s happening place – Chitnavis centre.
The hall for the event had beautifully laid out tables with attractive floral centre pieces and candles – but guests preferred to stand around the food counters waiting for their plates to be filled while filling each other with the latest news and gossip!
The air was filled with the smoke and aroma of sizzling pork, fish and vegetables and the excited voices.
Chefs and their assistants were hard pressed to feed everyone – which was all done live in front of the guests. There were stalls of three kinds of specialty Japanese food, each became a hit.
Gagan has promised to make this a regular event – and we hold him to his promise.
