Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh for alleged violation of Election Code of Conduct.
A court in Rampur has sentenced Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi to one year jail term and a fine of Rs 4,000 for violating the Model Code of Conduct six years ago. However, Naqvi was then released on a surety of Rs15,000.
BJP supporters were chanting slogans in support of Naqvi outside the court.
Sources added that during the 2009 National Election, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi’s convoy was stopped by the police for regular checking but his supporters had allegedly protested this and had staged a sit-in outside a police station. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi reportedly addressed a speech at the spot. This led to Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi being charged with “unlawful assembly.”
