Nagpur: The city experienced moderate unseasonal rains late Sunday evening, resulting in waterlogging in several low-lying areas as is typical during such weather events. This led to a slowdown in traffic movement at various major junctions across the city.
Throughout the day, the sun intermittently hid behind clouds, eventually giving way to cloudy skies by evening. Subsequently, thunderstorms and lightning ensued, possibly as a sequel to Saturday’s devastation, with isolated incidents of tree uprooting reported in a few areas.
The thunderstorms also caused power cuts in many localities, keeping the staff of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited on their toes. Some areas remained without power until late evening. The Regional Meteorological Centre, Nagpur, issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for the city on Sunday, predicting rainfall accompanied by hail and thunderstorms in many parts of Vidarbha.
The weather department reiterated the ‘Orange Alert’ warning for select parts of Vidarbha, including Nagpur, for March 19 as well. Despite the rains on Sunday night, the maximum temperature in Nagpur reached 36.2 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature remained two degrees below normal.
