Nagpur: Residents of Shanti Nagar were left in a state of panic after a group of vandals created havoc in the area damaging a school bus and seven other four-wheelers in the early hours of Wednesday. The vehicle vandalism has sparked concerns over the effectiveness of night patrolling by Shanti Nagar Police.
The hooligans targeted a school bus (MH-49/J-1441) and smashed the rear windshields of several other vehicles, including a Toyota Innova SUV (MH43/L-1434), a car (MH-31/DK-0367), and a Fiat car (MH-40/AR-0882). Additionally, they damaged the front windscreens of a Maruti Suzuki Celerio (MH-49/AE-6714), a Maruti Swift Dzire (MH-49/AJ-3680), a Tata Ace mini truck (MH-31/AC-2819), and a Chevrolet Tavera (MH-40/AC-1875). All these vehicles were parked in front of their owners’ houses near the Chalis Sandas locality.
Residents, whose vehicles were vandalised, expressed their frustration with the police, criticising lack of action against the culprits. Despite the severity of the incident, Shanti Nagar Police had only registered a non-cognisable offence after the school bus owner, Mehfooz Rehman Abdul Gaffar (32), lodged a complaint.
A police officer stated that they were in the process of obtaining CCTV footage from the locality to identify the individuals involved in the vandalism. However, until late Wednesday evening, the police had made no progress in apprehending the culprits. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety and security in Shanti Nagar area, especially during the dark hours.
