Nagpur: For the first time in the history of Vidarbha hockey, the subjunior girls team finished a creditable fourth in the 8th Hockey India Sub-Junior Women’s National Championship (Division B). The national meet was held at Kaliabor in Assam. Hosts Assam emerged winners of the meet who defeated Hockey Coorg 4-0 in the final. Vidarbha sub-junior girls lost their bronze medal match to Uttarakhand 1-6 but their performance was praiseworthy as they defeated several top teams to finish in top four bracket from a pool of 17 state teams.
In the 3rd/4th classification match, it was Hockey Uttarakhand who put up an excellent team performance as they scored a 6-1 victory overVidarbha. Hockey Uttarakhand scored through Khushi Katariya (1st) Swati (10th), Shruti Mamgain (18th, 63rd), Hema Singh Bisht (67th) and Prachi (69th). Vidarbha’s consolation goal came from the stick of Vaishnavi Gulhane in 56th minute. ThoughVidarbha girls lost their knock-out matches, their performance in the tournament best so far.
For the first time, the girls recorded wins in all four league matches. They defeated Bengal (2-1, Manipur (2-0), Jammu and Kashmir (4-0) and Puducherry 2- 1). Captain Himanshi Gawande led from the front and scored goals in almost all the league games. The other players too performed well.
