Nagpur: Pradeep Maheshwari, a staunch advocate for Vidarbha’s statehood and a driving force behind several development initiatives for the region, passed away on Sunday after a prolonged battle with colon cancer. He was 66. His funeral was held on Monday morning at Mokshadham Ghat.
Maheshwari’s commitment to Vidarbha’s progress remained unwavering, even during his treatment. Known for his fearless advocacy and visionary ideas, he left behind a legacy of selfless service and ambitious plans for the region’s growth.
A Champion for Vidarbha’s Progress
Maheshwari was instrumental in pushing for several key projects, including a petrochemical complex and a refinery in Nagpur. His associates credit him for the state government’s techno-feasibility study on the project, which was submitted earlier this year. Despite enduring painful chemotherapy sessions, he continued to campaign for the initiative on social media, ensuring it remained a priority.
Ahead of His Time
Friends and colleagues remember Maheshwari as a forward-thinker. Decades ago, he envisioned Gadchiroli as a steel industry hub and advocated for coal bed methane exploration in the region. His ideas were not just limited to industrial growth; he also proposed desilting dams to improve water storage in the region.
A Relentless Advocate
Maheshwari was known for his straightforward approach, often criticizing politicians for their inaction towards Vidarbha’s development. His advocacy was driven purely by financial and developmental viability, disregarding political implications.
Contributions to Vidarbha Economic Development Council (VED)
A key member of VED, Maheshwari played a crucial role in shaping the organization’s initiatives. Even after leaving VED, he continued his efforts independently. His last social media post pointed out pending investment proposals for the region.
Tributes Pour In
Former VED president Devendra Parekh highlighted Maheshwari’s role in initiating the state government’s study for a petrochemical complex and his idea for a mineral-based industrial estate at Ramtek, which is now taking shape.
JF Salve, a former SICOM official, called him a visionary, recalling his early proposals for industrial growth in Vidarbha. Current VED president Rina Sinha described his contributions as unmatched.
Pradeep Maheshwari’s legacy is a testament to his tireless efforts for Vidarbha’s development. His vision and dedication will continue to inspire those who seek progress for the region.
