Nagpur: Vidarbha’s pacer Yash Thakur made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on Monday.
Playing against four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), LSG captain KL Rahul included Thakur in place of Jaidev Unadkat who had a forgettable day against Delhi Capitals with a figures of 39-0 in three overs on Saturday. Thakur’s debut figures read 4-0-36-0. Thakur started well giving away only seven runs from his first over. To some extent, he put brakes on the carnage from CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway who were going hammer and tongs.
Prior to Thakur’s first over, CSK were going strong with 79 from six overs. His second over saw CSK picking nine runs with a top edge boundary by Gaikwad and five singles. His third over produced 12 runs with Moeen Ali hitting a six and a boundary. Bowling LSG’s penultimate over, Thakur almost got Ambati Rayudu on his fourth delivery but the ball flew past over a jumping Avesh Khan missing his fingers by a few inches.
Thakur also took the catch of danger man Ben Stokes off Avesh Khan. Thakur was picked by LSG for a whopping Rs 45 lakh during the auction held in December 2022. Thakur has been termed as a death-over specialist and has impressed everyone in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season with his pace and accuracy. The pacer also has an ability to swing the ball both ways.
