Nagpur: Following Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadanvis had cautioned Maharashtrians about drought-like-condition, the state could face this summer, Nagpur Today interacted with Kaustav Chatterjee, Founder, Green Vigil Foundation, enquiring about the matter.
Kaustav Chatterjee explained the statement given by Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis is more of a precautionary measure based on the initial report released by Climate Prediction Centre of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States. The said report has predicted, there are increasing chances of El Niño at longer forecast horizons.
Chatterjee explained, ‘El Nino’ condition is when surface water in the equatorial Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than average and the east winds get weaker, bringing about extremes that include flooding or drought. In the past El Nino, had suppressed rainfall over the Indian sub-continent during the monsoon season. The surface waters in equatorial Pacific Ocean sometimes get unusually warmer and, at other times, unusually colder due to complex ocean-atmosphere interactions. Both these states have an impact on global weather phenomena.
However, Chatterjee also stated, it is too early to predict as presently the surface water of the ocean is colder than normal, a state described as La Nina. However, the situation will change as La Nina conditions are weakening.
Chatterjee highlighted, during his tenure as CM, Devendra Fadnavis had witnessed acute water crisis in Maharashtra, hence, he has advised authorities to take precautionary measures and all possible steps so that situation like 2016 does not arise, wherein around 70 Lakhs litre of potable water was supplied by railways to places like Latur.
Explaining the main reason behind water crisis in Maharashtra, Chatterjee stated, along with erratic rainfall, unregulated withdrawal of groundwater is also the main reason behind water crisis in Maharashtra.
