Nagpur:The debate over the necessity of cement roads in Nagpur has intensified as city residents express concerns about their impact. While cement roads are known for their durability, they also pose risks such as waterlogging, decreased groundwater levels, and increased humidity. The city faced flood-like conditions in 2023 and, more recently, heavy rains have led to water entering homes again. Residents have reported that the extensive construction of cement roads is a contributing factor to these issues, according to complaints shared with *Nagpur Today*.
Some residents oppose the cement roads, citing these problems, while others believe the roads are beneficial.
Impact of Cement Roads on Water Drainage:
On September 23, 2023, Nagpur experienced severe rainfall that submerged the entire city despite the absence of major rivers. The situation became so critical that SDRF, NDRF, and the army had to conduct rescue operations using boats in residential areas. The elevated cement roads contributed to water entering people’s homes.
The lack of proper drainage alongside these cement roads exacerbated the situation. Many ground-floor apartments in high-rise buildings were inundated up to chest level. This recent flood has led to growing fears among residents about cement roads, resulting in increased opposition to their construction.
