Nagpur: The mere mention of snakes can make many people’s hearts skip a beat, and encountering one near their home can cause widespread panic. Typically, people instinctively reach for a stick to kill the snake. However, there is a growing awareness about the importance of snakes as farmers’ friends and crucial components of the food chain and environment. Consequently, there is a noticeable shift in the district towards rescuing snakes rather than killing them.
Against this backdrop, the Sadar Police took the initiative to raise awareness about snake species. On July 19, members of the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Multipurpose Institution gathered at the Sadar Police Station to rescue various snake species captured from different parts of Nagpur district. Among these was a 14-foot Indian rock python, which became the highlight of the event.
The main objective, with the support of Sadar Police Station’s Chief Inspector Manish Thakre, was to educate Nagpur residents about snakes and reduce the fear and misunderstandings surrounding them.
