Nagpur News: New Traffic System Reduces Commute Time Between Morris College and Ajni

Nagpur: In a major relief for commuters, Nagpur’s new traffic management system has significantly reduced travel time between Morris College Square and Ajni Square. Once notorious for evening traffic snarls, the route now takes just five minutes to cover—down from the previous 30 minutes—thanks to changes implemented by the Nagpur Traffic Police on Monday.

The new system, particularly focused on the Wardha Road corridor, was put in place to address bottlenecks at Shahid Gowari Flyover, Rahate Colony Square, and Kriplani Square. The traffic situation, especially during peak hours, had long been a source of frustration for daily commuters.

DCP Traffic Archit Chandak, who spearheaded the project, shared that the initial response from citizens has been overwhelmingly positive. “The new traffic management arrangements have made a noticeable difference, and many motorists have appreciated the smoother and faster commute,” Chandak said.

The experimental system has introduced several key changes. Notably, right turns at crucial intersections like Rahate Colony Square and Kriplani Square have been temporarily prohibited during peak hours from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. This has alleviated the previous congestion caused by two traffic signals that created significant delays along the route.

DCP Chandak explained that roughly 80% of traffic on the route moves straight ahead, with only 20% making right or U-turns. As a result, signal timings have been extended by 10 seconds to further streamline movement and reduce delays.

While the majority of drivers have welcomed the improved traffic conditions, some motorists have faced difficulties due to the restriction on right turns. However, officials assure that the inconvenience affects only a small number of drivers compared to the broader benefits.

To accommodate those needing to make U-turns, a new U-turn point has been designated just 200 meters ahead of Kriplani Square, near the Central Jail.

The new system was closely monitored by a large number of traffic police personnel, who were stationed at critical points to ensure the smooth functioning of the new traffic arrangements. Strict instructions have been given to officers to maintain their positions during the crucial evening hours.

This new traffic management initiative is part of a broader effort by the Nagpur Traffic Police to improve road conditions and reduce congestion across the city.
