Ambazari Lake Overfull
Nagpur: Following a week of continuous heavy rainfall, the water level in Nagpur’s Ambazari Lake has reached a critical point. On Saturday, the water level was recorded at 316.20 metres, just shy of the cut wall overflow level of 316.24 metres. With only 0.04 metres remaining before overflow, the situation has become increasingly alarming.
In response to the rising water levels, authorities have begun releasing water from Ambazari Lake. The release operation involves the use of four pumps and two outlets to manage and reduce the water level in the lake. This proactive measure aims to prevent potential flooding and mitigate the risk of overflow.
The current situation is reminiscent of the events on September 23 of the previous year, when incessant rainfall and a cloudburst led to the overflow of the Ambazari Dam. The resultant surge caused the Nag River to swell, leading to water gushing into residential and commercial areas across several parts of the city.
The city’s administration is on high alert, closely monitoring the water levels and weather forecasts to prevent a repeat of last year’s flooding. Residents in low-lying areas are advised to stay vigilant and prepared for potential evacuation if the water levels continue to rise.
The heavy rains over the past week have not only affected Ambazari Lake but have also raised concerns about waterlogging and flooding in other parts of the city. The situation remains dynamic, and continuous monitoring is crucial to safeguard lives and property.
