New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government may have to fill in three constitutional positions — Chairman of the 15th Finance Commission, Comptroller and Auditor General, and one vacacny in the Election Commission. Informal exercises have since begun to fill in the posts.
A lakshman rekha has been drawn that the appointees will be between in the age bracket of 60 to 65 and the head of the Finance Commission should be a technocrat and not a politician. We can tell you that the names doing the rounds are NK Singh and Ashok Lavasa, but the Prime Minister wants a person with a strong background in economics.
Also NK Singh may be out of the race since he is over 65 and so the choice is now down to two or three former finance secretaries. Will the prime minister spring a surprise by bringing a professor or a chancellor from a foreign university like former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan? Excitement is rife in North Block and the decision is expected by early September.
