Nagpur News: The Ward Officers and Corporators of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) have been creating havoc and punching holes to the coffers of the civic body by terrorizing their own employees and OCW staffers who head for the recovery of pending Water Tax amounting to lakhs and lakhs of rupees. And the list of defaulters is long and getting longer every year. The employees return empty handed thus starving the NMC of the much needed revenue and turning the financial condition precarious.

The Orange City Water (OCW) Company, taking advantage of the massive unemployment problem, had appointed several youths in all NMC Zones to handle the water supply and other related works on very low salaries.
However, the youths, leave alone handling their allotted duties, were forced to face public wrath following haphazard and irresponsible state of affairs carried out by the OCW Company. Sometimes, the public anger reached to such a pass, the youths escaped beating by the outraged consumers.
The outcome of all these factors forced the two-dozen odd youths to leave the OCW service making the situation worse. New appointments were effected in every Zone but a piquant situation has arisen.
The large number of appointments has created a sitting arrangement problem and now NMC is in exercise of adjusting its Water Works Department officials to other officials’ chambers.
CONNECTION “RECOVERY:”
The new water supply connections have also emerged an opportunity for employees to earn an easy money. The needy consumers, after paying a hefty price to OCW for new water supply connections, have to wait for six or more months for the connections. This disturbing fact forces the neediest consumers to pay “extra” charges to the employees in order to get the connections as soon as possible. “No extra charges, no early connections” have become a “policy” of the concerned employees. The employees also turn a blind eye towards “water stealers or robbers” for the “extra charge.”
WATER WORKS DEPARTMENT CHIEF’S ROLE:
The Acting Chief of Water Works Department is known to have “soft corner” for the irresponsible and adamant OCW and he cares a hoot for hundreds of complaints against OCW for irregular or sometimes no water supply at all.
The Water Works Chief, leave alone common consumers, even the Corporators and other NMC officials are derided by Chief. According to sources, the secret behind the Water Works Chief maintaining “soft corner” has been revealed as the OCW has provided jobs to more than two dozen near and dear ones of Water Works Chief.
With the dubious state of affairs prevailing in the NMC and OCW, it would not be a surprise the precious water being sold in black.
