West Zone Jr. Athletics Championship: Nagpur’s Mitali bags second gold

Nagpur: Mitali Bhoyar of Nagpur bagged her second gold medal while Bhuvneshwari Masram and Prajwal Dhanre also of the city won a gold each to help Maharashtra bag overall championship title in the 35th West Zone Junior Athletics Championship that concluded at the Synthetic Track of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) on Sunday.

On the third and final day of the meet, Mitali (10min, 31.85 secs), as expected ran to glory in the 3000m (U20) race, she was followed by district-mate Arti Bhagat in the second spot. Mitali, who trains under Ravindra Tong, had won 1500m gold on opening day.

Bhuvneshwari bagged the gold medal in the U20 400m hurdles with a timing of 1min, 9.49 secs. A member of Nav Maharashtra Krida Mandal, she trains under Naresh Shelke.

Krida Prabodhini’s Prajwal pocketed gold in the U20 boys 400m hurdles carving out a time of 56.35 secs. In the U14 girls triathlon, Nagpur’s Ananya Mangar collected 2441 points to pick up a silver.

All the winners were awarded medals and gifts at the hands of Organising Secretary Dr Sharad Suryawanshi, Dr Nitin Jangitwar and Dr Sneha Palsurkar. Maharashtra team dominated in all groups and finished with 37 gold, 19 silver and 7 bronze medals to take the overall championship title.
