New Delhi/Nagpur: “Garib ki thaali mei farak nahi padna chahiye (the poor should not be affected)…” was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s angry retort to an official who sought to explain that there shall be a marginal increase in the prices of common man’s items once the Goods and Services Tax is implemented.
In an interaction with officials of the Central Board of Excise and Customs and the Central Board of Direct Taxes, Modi implicated that tax collectors should be aware that this is the government policy.
Modi’s outburst left the CBEC and CBDT members shocked.
