Nagpur: The winter chill returned with a sharp intensity as Nagpur witnessed a significant drop in temperature on Thursday, with the mercury plunging to 8.8 degrees Celsius. This marked a steep decline of 5.5 degrees compared to the previous day and made it the fourth coldest day of the season.
The sudden dip in temperature was keenly felt by Nagpurians, prompting residents to don sweaters and winter jackets. The impact of the chill intensified due to northerly winds that set in on Wednesday evening. After a hiatus of nearly ten days, the change in wind patterns brought the minimum temperature down to single digits.
Adding to the chilly conditions was the clear sky, which played a role in further reducing the night temperature. The relative humidity, recorded at 53%, compounded the cold, making the weather feel even more brisk.
Residents are bracing for more cold days ahead, with meteorological patterns suggesting that the current weather conditions may persist over the coming days.
Neighbouring Gondia also reported a low of 9.8 degrees Celsius, making the spot second coldest place in Vidarbha after Nagpur on Thursday. India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that the temperature would decrease further in coming days all over Vidarbha region. However, there was no change in day temperature in Nagpur on Thursday as the maximum was recorded at 30.4 degrees Celsius, 2.6 degrees above normal.

When the minimum temperature departure remains below normal by 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees Celsius for more than two days, then the Weather Department declares it a cold wave. In this winter season, Nagpur recorded 7.0 degrees Celsius, the lowest one which was reported on December 15, 2024.
