Nagpur: Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is gearing up for the full-fledged start to the new academic session. From June 24 onward, the frequency of Nagpur Metro train operations would be increased. Metro trains would operate every 10 minutes from 8 am to 8 pm from all four terminal stations — Khapri, Automotive Square, Prajapati Nagar and Lokmanya Nagar stations.

The academic session has begun partly with opening of a section of schools for senior classes. The State Board schools also are set to start soon. Considering school timings and need for students to reach school on time, safe and secure, Maha Metro has introduced the changes. It was observed that a section of schools and colleges, continue till 6 pm and often students attend extra classes; hence the decision to stretch the operations to 8 pm.

Importantly, Nagpur Metro rationalised its fare structure, which led to 33% reduction in train fare. Additional 30% discount is available on Maha Card for students. The cumulative fare for students stands at around 50% of the fare in the pre-rationalisation days. The rationalisation of fare structure has had a positive effect with Nagpur Metro registering significant rise in its ridership.

The city has witnessed a rise in road mishaps in recent times, it is hence advisable to students to travel by Metro for a safe and secure journey. Nagpur Metro offers not just safe and secure journey; the fact that students are allowed to carry bicycles inside metro trains (at no extra fare), further ensures seamless connectivity to students.

The 10-minute frequency has been reduced from existing frequency of 15 minutes. Metro train services are available from 6 am to 10 pm. While the decision has been taken keeping the school and college students in mind, the decision would benefit office going staff, trading and business community too. With the academic activity set to increase in the coming days, Nagpur Metro urged students and their parents to prioritise Metro travel for an economical and comfortable journey.
